I have two boring pieces of info for you tonight team, sorry:

  1. IF YOU HAVEN’T RETURNED YOUR EQUIPMENT TO THE GYM YET, PLEASE DO SO. ASAP. Each day from now that it is outstanding, will be an additional 5 minutes that Ash will spend sat, naked on your face following a weighted 10km run. Your choice.
Thank you to those who have, you have avoided Ash’s but hole!

  2. Secondly…WE HAVE AN L1 AT THE GYM THIS WEEKEND (kind of - a very bizarre socially distanced L1). Therefore the workout will be led by Conners Conroy, at Roath Park. Please look out for details on the members group.

Anyway, here’s to hopefully one of the last workouts that we HAVE to do outside.

WoD - Wednesday 28th August, 2019

A word from the boss…

“In gymnastics, completing a routine without error will not get you a perfect score, the 10.0—only a 9.7. To get the last three tenths of a point, you must demonstrate “risk, originality, and virtuosity” as well as make no mistakes in execution of the routine.”

“Risk is simply executing a movement that is likely to be missed or botched; originality is a movement or combination of movements unique to the athlete—a move or sequence not seen before. Understandably, novice gymnasts love to demonstrate risk and originality, for both are dramatic, fun, and awe inspiring— especially among the athletes themselves, although audiences are less likely to be aware when either is demonstrated.”

“Virtuosity, though, is a different beast altogether. Virtuosity is defined in gymnastics as “performing the common uncommonly well.” Unlike risk and originality, virtuosity is elusive, supremely elusive. It is, however, readily recognized by audience as well as coach and athlete. But more importantly, more to my point, virtuosity is more than the requirement for that last tenth of a point; it is always the mark of true mastery (and of genius and beauty).”

“There is a compelling tendency among novices developing any skill or art, whether learning to play the violin, write poetry, or compete in gymnastics, to quickly move past the fundamentals and on to more elaborate, more sophisticated movements, skills, or techniques. This compulsion is the novice’s curse—the rush to originality and risk.”

“The novice’s curse is manifested as excessive adornment, silly creativity, weak fundamentals and, ultimately, a marked lack of virtuosity and delayed mastery. If you’ve ever had the opportunity to be taught by the very best in any field you’ve likely been surprised at how simple, how fundamental, how basic the instruction was. The novice’s curse afflicts learner and teacher alike. Physical training is no different.”

“What will inevitably doom a physical training program and dilute a coach’s efficacy is a lack of commitment to fundamentals. We see this increasingly in both programming and supervising execution. Rarely now do we see prescribed the short, intense couplets or triplets that epitomize CrossFit programming. Rarely do trainers really nitpick the mechanics of fundamental movements.”

“I understand how this occurs. It is natural to want to teach people advanced and fancy movements. The urge to quickly move away from the basics and toward advanced movements arises out of the natural desire to entertain your client and impress him with your skills and knowledge. But make no mistake: it is a sucker’s move. Teaching a snatch where there is not yet an overhead squat, teaching an overhead squat where there is not yet an air squat, is a colossal mistake. This rush to advancement increases the chance of injury, delays advancement and progress, and blunts the client’s rate of return on his efforts. In short, it retards his fitness.”

“If you insist on basics, really insist on them, your clients will immediately recognize that you are a master trainer. They will not be bored; they will be awed. I promise this. They will quickly come to recognize the potency of fundamentals. They will also advance in every measurable way past those not blessed to have a teacher so grounded and committed to basics.”

“Training will improve, clients will advance faster, and you will appear more experienced and professional and garner more respect, if you simply recommit to the basics.”

Glassman, well guess what, he can write just slightly better than I!

WoD - Friday 2nd August, 2019

Thank F**K it’s Friday and the is NO more destruction of the shoulder joint!

Still, there is a slight possibility that I might be Suller in this workout, if of course half way around his second round run a large group of Valley Commandos screech their 17 seater mini-bus to a halt just as he is making the turn, rugby tackle him to the ground, sit on his face momentarily in an act of disorientation before dragging him back to the awaiting Aberdare bound pleasure bus. And, upon reaching his sordid destination (as well as en route) performs classic “valleys treats” which can only resemble sexual assault, dumping him back in the same location, energy sapped and far less of a man, but with his right nano lace untied.
Then, and only then, might I stand a chance of beating the whippet.

Come on summer! We’ve been working our nuts off this week to look beach ready! Show us the sunshine. More importantly than the beach, is Glastonbury. Apparently, 75% of the gym’s membership base is attending this years festival, and the coaching team don’t only appreciate the break, but sincerely hope that you all don’t get pissed on too much!

Be aware, in order to actually get any cider, you will need to get up exceptionally early in order to beat Conroy. He loves a good flagon…

The end of the week is near! For those of you who are reading this, you have nearly survived the full blown assault by one of Batman’s most feared enemies…HanBane.
Rather than allow her to attempt to take over CrossFit Cardiff, similarly to Gotham City, only with some devilish programming, maybe we should refrain. Instead saving us all but placing the caped crusader in sole danger.
All those in favour please comment…Holy Quadricep Doms Batman!!

WoD - Friday 22nd March, 2019

This must be what the night before your wedding feels like, all tense and nervous. Waiting, wondering, contemplating what it is going to feel like, to walk rather down the aisle, but up to the barbell to bang out as many thrusters as Dave Castro wants you to. Unfricking lucky!

We all know that Castro just loves a thruster, and so we may as well love them too. Get excited, because you are going to do the workout whether you want to or not…and so false motivation is better than no motivation…

Just don’t be all “American” about it! 😉

So, who’s hip flexors are in bits?? A few of you guys a bet - possibly not though - as much as Hamish’s are. Holy shit, if you are reading this buddy, I hope it is from flat on your back.
A very well done for completing your goal tomorrow, that is one hell of an effort! Not only did he smash 5000 burpees out of the park, but has more than doubled his intended monetary target. But, I think we can help him to get more.

Please, please, share this next link, again and again. It is a wonderful cause and we can lean on our community to ensure he is able to hand over a significant amount.

WoD - Tuesday 5th June, 2018

I would like to offer a huge congratulations to all those athletes who battled all weekend at the Meridian regionals, for a spot to the CrossFit Games. Unbelievable heart was witnessed all over the competition floor, from likeable and humble athletes. It was a true pleasure to be involved with.

I would also like to congratulate Ash for heeding my appropriate advice and not f**king it up. As well as Hannah, who was forced into the Demo Team, with minimal prep and even less fuss!
Not once did she face plant in front of hundreds of athletes, more volunteers and Adrian Bozman...unlike me!

WOD - Friday 18th September

Tomorrow we take on a well known CrossFit workout, but with a Partner Twist.

Partner Fight Gone Bad!

3 Rounds of:

  • Wall Balls (20lbs/14lbs)
  • SDHP (35kg/25kg)
  • Box Jumps 20"
  • Push Press (35kg/25kg)
  • Row (Calories)

Each partner alternates a minute on each station, one minute on and one minute off. As a pair you will accumulate as many reps as possible over the five stations for a total of 3 rounds.

You will forego the usual minutes rest at the end of the round since you will be resting every other minute anyway.  The workout will therefore last 10 minutes a round and 30 minutes in total.

Here's a picture of Camille Overhead squatting....... Just because its Friday.
